An ECMO Unit (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation System) is an advanced life-support system used to provide temporary extracorporeal support for patients with severe cardiac and/or respiratory failure. The system circulates blood outside the body through a specialized pump and membrane oxygenator. The oxygenator adds oxygen to the blood and removes carbon dioxide before the blood is returned to the patient.
Depending on the clinical configuration, ECMO may be operated in veno-venous (VV) mode for primarily respiratory support or veno-arterial (VA) mode when both cardiac and respiratory support are required. Modern ECMO systems generally incorporate a centrifugal blood pump, membrane oxygenator, flow sensors, pressure monitoring and temperature monitoring.
An integrated display allows clinicians to observe important system parameters, while visual and audible alarms can provide alerts for abnormal flow, pressure, temperature or other system conditions. Battery backup can help maintain operation during temporary power interruptions.
ECMO units are primarily used in intensive care units, cardiac surgery departments and specialized critical-care centers. Because ECMO is a complex therapy, operation requires appropriately trained healthcare professionals, strict monitoring, and adherence to the manufacturer's instructions and institutional clinical protocols.
